Overtoun Bridge – Scotland’s Mysterious Canine Suicide Spot

Image
There are some things in this world that are simply beyond explanation. Like the fact that in the past 50 years, about 50 dogs have jumped to their deaths from the exact same spot on the 100-year-old Overtoun Bridge in Milton, near Dumbarton, Scotland. In 2005, five dogs had jumped in a span of just 6 months. The canine suicide spot is located between the last two parapets on the right-hand side of the bridge, which is where all the dogs took the fatal leap. And to add to the strangeness, almost all the incidents have taken place on clear, sunny days, the dogs always being long-nosed breeds – collies, retrievers and labs. The situation, according to the Scottish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, is a ‘heartbreaking mystery’. “There are lots of owners whose dogs have died and who are trying to find out why they jumped,” the Society says. One of the victims on the bridge was collie dog Ben, who leaped to his death in 1995 while taking a walk with his owner D

Black-Eyed Children, Don't Invite Them Into Your Home!

Image
The legend of the black eyed children is a modern urban legend that has been circulating online and in campfire stories for decades. The stories typically involve two or three children, who appear out of nowhere and ask to be let into a person's home. The children are described as being very pale, with black eyes that are completely devoid of any pupils or irises. They are often dressed in old-fashioned clothing, and they speak in a monotone voice. If the person refuses to let them in, the children will become increasingly insistent and threatening. They may say things like, "We just want to come in and warm up," or "We're lost and we need your help." In some cases, the children have been known to become violent if they are not let in. There are many different variations of the black eyed children legend, but the basic premise is always the same. The children are said to be dangerous, and they should not be trusted. There is no scientific evidence to suppo

Is Dorney Park Haunted?

Image
Dorney Park is a historic amusement park located in South Whitehall Township, Pennsylvania, just outside of Allentown. The park was founded in 1860 by Solomon Dorney, who built a trout hatchery and summer resort on the property. In 1870, Dorney decided to open the park to the public and added a variety of attractions, including rides, a petting zoo, and games. By 1880, Dorney Park was a popular destination for families and thrill-seekers alike. Ghostly Legends of Dorney Park Dorney Park has been a popular amusement park in Pennsylvania for over 160 years. Throughout the years, the park has been updated with new rides and attractions, but some things have remained the same. One of those things is the legend of the ghost that haunts the park. The ghost is said to be a man who was killed in a mining accident in the 1800s. His body was never found, and his spirit is said to wander the park, especially near the Dominator, a roller coaster that was built on the site of the old mine. Th

Fairfield Hills State Hospital, Newtown

Image
The first of a trio of former abandoned  “insane asylums” on the list, Fairfield Hills was closed by the state in 1995, and in the ensuing years has grown into a popular destination for ghost seekers as well as urban explorers. Like many former hospitals for the mentally disturbed, tales of cruelty and abuse surround the facility, which when combined with stories of odd happenings in the network of underground tunnels here — which have since been filled in — have helped forged its reputation, which was exacerbated when an episode of MTV’s “Fear” was filmed here. Plans to demolish the buildings and develop the 700+ acres keep starting and sputtering, but eventually this hospital of horror will only be a bad memory.

Worcester State Hospital

Also Known As THE WORCESTER LUNATIC Asylum. It opened in 1833, but by the 1870s, it had become inadequate for the state's needs. It was proprosed that contrsuction start on a brand new asylum - a grouping of much smaller, decentralized buildings. However, this was rejected, and a new, massive building was erected. It was designed by architect Ward P. Delano. Completed in 1877, the total cost reached well over one million dollars. In 1901 a satellite facility which became the Grafton State Hospital was opened in nearby Grafton, Massachusetts to give non-violent patients an opportunity to engage in therapeutic work in a rural environment.Overcrowding soon became a problem, and Merrick Bemis, the superintendent at the time, called for the construction of a new asylum. A massive structure was to be laid out in the Kirkbride Plan and located on Belmont Street. Construction began in 1870 and the newly built Worcester State Hospital was completed in 1876 at the cost of well ove

The Agnews Insane Asylum

Image
The Agnews Insane Asylum, located in San Jose California, is now owned by Sun Microsystems and known as “Sun Microsystems/Agnews Developmental Center”. The State of California built the Agnews Residential Facility in 1885 as a place for treating mentally ill patients, instead of housing them with criminals or in hospitals with sick and dying patients as was the practice prior to 1885. In 1906, a terrible tragedy struck the area as a tremendous earthquake shook the ground all around the local area. This terrible event marked one of California’s greatest loss of life in a single incident when the main treatment building, including the clock tower, collapsed and killed the 112 residents and staff who were inside. Even today after the buildings have been torn down and new ones built people report screams on foggy nights and strange things happening in the new dorm rooms just built there. Doors open , lights are turned on and off and horrible smells just seem to come up out of the fl

Italy’s Most Haunted Island: Poveglia Island of Horror

Image
Poveglia Island is a small island in the Venetian Lagoon, Italy. It has a long and dark history, and is said to be one of the most haunted places in the world. The island was first inhabited in the 4th century AD, and was originally used as a quarantine station for ships arriving in Venice. In the 14th century, it became a dumping ground for victims of the Black Death, and is estimated that over 160,000 people died on the island during this time. In the 18th century, Poveglia was used as a mental asylum. The conditions on the island were said to be horrific, and many patients died there. There are also rumors that a doctor who worked at the asylum performed lobotomies on patients without anesthesia, and that he eventually went mad and threw himself from the bell tower. The island was abandoned in 1975, and is now off-limits to the public. However, it is still said to be haunted by the ghosts of the people who died there. Visitors to the island have reported seeing apparitions, he
